Dear Editor,
I had greeted the rebirth of the PNC after the May 2015 with unrestrained enthusiasm. I know I will invite opprobrium when I say that I believe Guyana is past its best days. Our best period was under Forbes Burnham. I don’t mean by this statement to downplay the role of Desmond Hoyte. I admired Cheddi Jagan but his health did not allow him to show Guyana what he was capable of. I have not even a passing interest in the non-existent legacy of Bharrat Jagdeo.
My enthusiasm has gone. I don’t think we will see before 2020 any goodwill from the PNC. This is not the PNC from the days of Forbes Burnham and Desmond Hoyte. This is not the Guyana we knew forty five years ago. I didn’t intend to write this letter but I did after I read that Independence flag-raising ceremony will be staged at Stabroek Market Square and all the poor vendors, hire car drivers and mini-buses will be driven out.
Mr. Editor, has President Granger lost his mind? Is President Granger an enemy of Black people? Has President Granger any love for the common man? Why Stabroek Market Square Mr. Editor, when there is a new venue that is now the place to hold our national ceremonies. I refer you to D’Urban Park. Is our government devoid of commonsense? Compare the space Stabroek Market Square with that of D’Urban Park. People will be cramped for room at the Square. Why then did the Government build the D’Urban Park venue?
Mr. Editor, I can’t wait to read Freddie Kissoon’s take on this madness. I know as night follows day, Mr. Kissoon will have his say and it will be one that will dishearten this nation. Knowing Freddie Kissoon, the way he will put it over will leave all of us wondering if Guyana is still a country. I have heard people say that all Freddie Kissoon preaches is gloom and doom. I would say to them not to emphasize gloom and doom but query whether his points can be backed up with evidence.
Mr. Kissoon is someone I hope will enter politics because he alone reads this country correctly, reads it with a sharp mind and tells us what is wrong with Guyana. A lot is wrong with our country Mr. Editor. A lot is wrong with the PNC in office, Mr. Editor. I have left out of my concerns with the AFC. They are just there for the sake of being there
Some of us who love the PNC try daily to figure out what is going through their heads. Is Mr. Granger in charge? If he is not, who then is calling the shots? It is Mr. Granger’s army colleagues. It is Minister Harmon? Is it the old boys from the PNC like Oscar Clark? Mr. Editor, I can live with a few mistakes but not what we are seeing within just two years. Mr. Editor, when you see what is going on, you have to ask yourself, what next. I will now ask myself that every day; what next the PNC has in store for us. Mr. Editor, this is very disappointing for someone of my age who wanted to see Forbes Burnham’s party back in government. I hope Freddie Kissoon is reading this. I hope he tells us why the PNC is doing what it is doing. Only he can do it with the clarity with which people like me could understand
