Before the end of this year, the University of Guyana and Movie Towne Incorporated are expected to establish a solar power farm at the institution’s Turkeyen Campus.

A Memorandum of Understanding was yesterday inked between the two entities to pave the way for not only alternative energy, but the construction of a new housing complex for students as well.
Derek Chin, the Guyana-born Chairman of Trinidad’s Movie Towne Company explained that the plan is to install sufficient solar panels, capable of powering not only the entire Turkeyen campus, but the Movie Town Complex which is currently under construction, as well.
The MoU, which was signed yesterday by Chin and UG’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith, merely signals the intention to have the two projects up and running.
As a result, officials of the two entities could not determine the location, cost or the power capacity of the solar farm.
It was explained that over the next few weeks, technical teams from Trinidad are expected to arrive in Guyana to conduct the full study of what the establishment of the solar farm will entail.
As it relates to the construction housing complex for UG students, this project is scheduled to come off the ground during the first quarter of this year.
“The housing project is one that has a lot of dynamics, who obviously this will take some more time,” Professor Griffith pointed out. The housing complex is expected to be outfitted with approximately 150 rooms.
Intentions were signalled to have a similar project come on stream at the University’s Tain Campus in Berbice.
Professor Griffith said that both partnerships will see UG students benefiting tremendously. He explained that students will be exposed and rallied to work along on both the solar farm and the housing projects.
Negotiations for the two MoUs began earlier this year, with UG’s Dr. Paloma Mohamed, Deputy Chancellor, Philanthropy, Alumni and Civic Engagement (PACE) and Registrar Dr. Nigel Gravesande leading Guyana’s team.
The partnership between Movie Towne and UG also makes provisions for external assistance, from the Florida International University for example.
