be a day of exciting riding when they host the best cyclists in the nation for the 6th annual Baker’s Memorial Classic Day of Cycling in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden, today.
A new champion will be crowned at the end of today’s lucrative race as defending champion Geron Williams is out of the jurisdiction; riders will be battling around the Bauxite Mining Town and on the famous Linden Soesdyke Highway.
The younger brigade of riders, led by Jamal John have been showing excellent form so far this season and will once again be in the reckoning for top honours, Linden Bauxite Flayers’ Shaquel Agard will be aiming to keep the top prize in Linden but will have to dig deep so to do.
Other cyclists that will be in contention for the big prize are Paul De Nobrega, Briton John, Andrew Hicks and Hamza Eastman.
The race will pedal off outside the Baker’s residence at 08:00hrs proceed through the Town before entering the Linden Soesdyke Highway where Moblissa Hill is the turn back point.
Senior and junior riders will repeat the race route four times before concluding what would be an 80-mile event.
Juveniles veterans under and over-50 will match pedals for two laps, while the ladies will do so for one lap. Andrew Hicks won the junior category last year, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay took the veterans segment, Ronaldo Narine was the juvenile winner with Byonka Barker was the best female competitor and she is expected to be under starters orders in defense of her crown.
Meanwhile, the Baker’s family, which is the main sponsor, handed over the sponsorship cheque to the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club to offset expenses as well as prizes for today’s event. Receiving on behalf of the club was female rider, Hazina Bharrat who expressed the club’s appreciation to the Bakers’s family for their continued investment in the sport not only in Linden but throughout Guyana.
Other sponsors on board are Sports Plus Store, Squdra and the Guyana Sports Development Foundation.
