Miners remanded for chopping, beating buddy

Three miners were yesterday remanded to prison after they were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The men, Luncheon Felix, 32, of Mazaruni, Essequibo; Calvin Scott, 27, of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara and Riley John, 22, of North West District, all miners, are jointly charged with unlawful and malicious wounding.
The charge read that on March 31 at Mowasi, Essequibo, the men unlawfully and maliciously wounded Ornes Fredrick, with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause him actual bodily harm.
The men all pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail for the defendants citing the seriousness of the offence and the state in which the victim is.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question the defendants and the virtual complainant, who are all known to each other, were at a shop drinking alcohol when an argument ensued.
The prosecutor stated that the three accused dealt the victim several kicks and punches about his body which resulted in him receiving a punctured muscle to his left leg, a laceration to the left side of his face, a broken rib and a deep puncture to his lower back.
The prosecutor further stated that the injuries the victim received are life-threatening and he will likely be disfigured.
Bail was refused and the defendants were remanded to prison. They will make their next court appearance on April 19 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
