Long ago CLICO was a reliable company

Sorry to read about CLICO’s suggested ‘fall from grace’ within Guyana. I can only speak as I have found, and remember them as one of the few commercial concerns which had a ‘decent’ and fair employment policy and practice. They employed men and women in what seemed to be equal numbers of every race. In fact, this was not common practice in the 1950s. The staff always seemed happy and were always courteous.
I took out a life insurance policy with them at age 21, paid my insurance premiums throughout the term, moved to the UK, and when the policy matured, was pleasantly surprised when, in 1969 I think, their agent in London turned up at my address and handed me a cheque for the relevant amount. It came in handy to augment the down payment for the house we had just bought. Full marks to them! Which is more than could be said for my husband’s insurers, a long-established entity: he never received a penny from them, although we had roughly the same insurance history. I found CLICO to be reliable, honest, and fair in the 1950s/60s.
