What should have been a regular visit to their favourite take out spot came to an unexpected end for residents of East La Penitence, Georgetown on Saturday.
The men, Eon Davidson and John Alexander were left in a state of shock, after a human tooth was discovered in a portion of a box of chicken fried rice, purchased at a popular Durban Street Chinese Restaurant around noon.
The discovery was made by Davidson. The man explained that he had purchased two boxes of food from the restaurant at around 16:00 hours.
“I ride and go buy the food and come back to sit down and eat. I de chewing the food and just telling me neighbour, boy you got to ketch it while it hot when I bite something hard.
“When I spit it out and check, I see is a tooth and is not me own break. So, I call me friend right away and we say like somebody rotten teeth fall out and end up in the fried rice,” he explained.
After consulting with his friend, Davidson decided to take the food back to the restaurant.
“When we turned up at the restaurant, we tell the owner, and she saying no, is not no tooth, that is garlic or ginger.”
“But I showing she is a tooth and she holding out that is not that. She even try to tek away the box from we but we pull it away.”
“She think we stupid. We done reason fowl aint get teeth so that it can’t come from the chicken and it can’t be animal teeth. That is somebody rotten tooth fall in de fry rice.”
They lamented the fact that the Chinese Restaurant located at Durban Street, Lodge is often packed with consumers from all around Georgetown.
“The thing that vexed we more is that plenty people does buy at duh Restaurant. People does send them children to buy there too. We got a right to be concern. And we is regular customers. What would have happen if me friend de swallow duh teeth now,” Alexander said.
The men are now calling the episode nothing short of “unacceptable and disgusting.”
They eventually returned to the restaurant and spoke to the owners. The owners subsequently accepted that it was indeed a tooth in the fried rice and offered the men $20,000 to settle the matter.
But the angry men rejected the sum of money.
They noted that the price is too little to be compared with the health of consumers.
“They know what is people’s health; they playing with it. Health is more important than that settlement.”
The men are therefore calling on the health inspection authorities to look into the matter.
