A former corporal attached to the Guyana Defence Force was yesterday placed on $600,000 bail after he was arraigned before City Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Winston Haynes, who was represented by Attorney-at law Dexter Todd, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape committed on a young woman.
Haynes will make his next court appearance on March 27 before the same Magistrate.
It is alleged that the incident occurred last January at Camp Stephenson, an army base at Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
According to information the young woman was allegedly raped by the soldier in the presence of two of his colleagues, who also reportedly attempted to have sex with her.
The Director of Public Prosecutions had recommended that only Haynes be charged, even though two other ranks were initially accused. The woman was only allowed to leave after other army personnel at Camp Stephenson intervened.
According to information, all three soldiers who have been implicated in the matter have been dismissed from the force. The decision came at the conclusion of the Board of Inquiry which was put in place to investigate the allegation.
According to information reaching Kaieteur News, the young woman was dating Haynes and had gone to the base to see him. It was also reported that while at the base, the young woman refused to have sex with him, since two of his colleagues were there. However she was allegedly forced into having intercourse as the others looked on.
It was also reported that when the accused was finished, his two colleagues pulled and tugged at the woman as they attempted to force her into having sex with them.
The matter was then reported to the police after she was allowed to leave the base.
