day 2017, under the theme: a peace-building Commonwealth, yesterday. The venue was the Umana Yana in Kingston, Georgetown.
Annette Fergussion, Minister within the Ministry of Infrastructure; Anil Nandlall M.P; Pierre Giroux, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana; Greg Quinn, High Commissioner of Great Britain to Guyana; Tracey Haines, Deputy Head of Mission, High Commission of Australia; and Phillipe Walker, former Youth Parliament Participant were among the guests.
The National Assembly, every year, would normally host an event in observance of Commonwealth Day. This year, the event was a panel discussion to which it invited all the ambassadors from the Member of States that were present in Guyana. Also invited were two Members of Parliament and a youth representative. In addition to the panel discussion there was the launching an essay and poster competition for schools.
According to Hermina Gilgeous, Deputy clerk of the National Assembly, in order to achieve world peace, countries must come together to counter the growing menace of violence, fear, terrorism, and bloodshed. It is a huge task and nations would have to reach consensus on how to achieve their goals of a terror free country and in turn a terror free world.
The event was welcomed by members of the public, students and a number of government officials, who all participated in the healthy discussion on Commonwealth policies and systems they have in place to promote peace-building for all Commonwealth countries.
