Even as 26-year-old acid burn victim, Shondell Williamson, lies in a bed of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC), recovering from severe burns, efforts are afoot by the Overseas-based Charity Saving Hands and
Emergency Aid (SHEA) to get her the treatment she so desperately needs.
Earlier this year Williamson, suffered severe burns when her estranged husband threw acid on her while screaming, “If I can’t have you, no one else can.”
According to information posted on SHEA Website, the mother of two young boys is currently fighting to save her sight.
The website outlined that Shondell will be permanently disfigured since the burns cover her entire face. The extent of her injuries is so severe that she is not able to receive care in Guyana therefore she must travel overseas for treatment. Due to the state of the woman’s injuries, the Charity is unable to post pictures of her current condition.
Since SHEA Charity has accepted Shondell’s case, they are currently working to secure treatment.
Given that the group is funded by donations, it continues to seek members of the public for assistance on a case by case basis.
The group has been active in promoting a GOFUNDME on behalf of Williamson.
A relative of the injured woman recently disclosed that there has also been fund-raising activity in East Berbice to raise funds for the cause.
We are still looking to raise the monies, the relative said. Persons interested in making donations can call telephone 601-4040, 675-3709 or visit the SHEA website at www.sheacharity.org or the group’s Facebook page.
Months after ending an abusive relationship, with her then reputed husband, Williamson became a patient of the hospital after being doused with a corrosive substance.
Williamson, of New Street, New Amsterdam, a mother of two boys – aged six and three suffered first degree burns to her face, hands and abdomen.
She is also unable to open her left eye, and it is unclear if the eye was damaged.
According to initial reports around 8:00 pm, the woman was returning home when she noticed a man clad in women’s clothing coming in her direction.
As he approached, she recognised the person as her abusive ‘child father’, 34-year-old Alfred DeYounge called “Not ah Bai”.
Relatives of the injured woman had related that the man carried a white bowl with a liquid substance which he threw on the victim and quickly made his escape in a waiting car.
The man had threatened the mother of two countless times but no action was taken.
”He told her nuff time that if I can’t have you, no other man can. And now he do it so no other man ain’t gonna want she. She was scared. Always living scared cause she didn’t know if he was gonna kill her or what,” the relatives said.
”Shondell ‘s life change forever. She will never be the same again. All we saying is why he didn’t leave her alone and just go tek another lady. Why he had to do her this. He didn’t even think about the kids and how this will affect them,” they added.
