Government is looking, seriously, at the possibility of setting up an alumina plant. Minister of
Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, recently told Kaieteur News that there is an ongoing review of the bauxite industry with a particular emphasis on the feasibility of an alumina plant.
He disclosed that the government has appointed a review committee headed by “bauxite experts” former Member of Parliament, Lance Carberry, and Sylvester Carmichael. The committee is receiving heavy support from the Guyana Geology and Mines (GGMC), Region Ten administration and the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union.
Trotman said that given the national significance of the exercise, the government will also seek the participation of the opposition
Trotman reminded that A Partnership for National Unity and AFC (APNU+AFC) 2015 manifesto promised a review of the future of bauxite and a revisiting of the resuscitation of the alumina plant. He said that the committee is looking into the possibility of this and is expected to deliver a report in the first quarter of 2017. “So we are on our way of fulfilling yet another manifesto promise.”
Guyana’s bauxite industry has been in existence for over 100 years. The country once benefitted from an alumina plant which has been down for several years now.
