The time for a new party has arrived

Dear Editor,
I will admit that from my chair far away in the US, I will not see things as correctly as those who are part of daily life in Guyana. This distance however, should not deter me from adding my inexpensive two cents to my country’s debate. I never for a moment thought of Guyana as a country I have left behind. I am not young, not so old, but Guyana is my home. To tell the truth, there is only one family I have met that has told me they are finished with Guyana and would not ever think of returning.
I can say with utmost truthfulness, Guyana would comfortably reach over a million people if its politics and leadership were right. People would return. I know I would. I know my wife would. I know some of my children would. This list includes many, many friends. It would seem that there was a take-off ready to happen after the May 2015 change of government but with certain definiteness, I can say the APNU+AFC has gone astray.
I am sitting in my living room wondering why this happened and what Guyanese can do to get that figure up to a million. My thoughts are determined recently by what I see on different Facebook postings on the protest against parking meters. I am asking myself; is a third party in the making? From my distance, I cannot answer that question with definiteness but whether in the making or not, Guyana needs one.
I am no political analyst but I would say two things have made a third party possible. The failure of the AFC to be the safeguard of the nation. The other is Mr. Granger’s lack of a high profile as a President. Let me explain what I mean. The AFC became very successful as a third party because Guyanese saw it as the wedge between the two bad guys. They became the good guys. Now they appear be part of the bad boys set up.
Mr. Granger is someone I don’t know at all except he was a famous military man. It was natural for any stranger to politics to accept that he would be a good president and lead Guyana in the right direction. I am not certain Mr. Granger is leading at all. From where I sit the people heading the government are Mr. Harmon, Minister Jordan and the Attorney-General. Mr. Granger is not visible and Mr. Nagamootoo has taken leave of absence.
The recent protest against the parking meters should transform itself into a third party. Again I say I am no political analyst but there are strong prospects for a third party. But things have to be neatly put in place. The first question is; does the third party have people that all types of Guyanese respect and admire. I would say yes. Two names come to my mind Freddie Kissoon and Nigel Hughes. I have never met or spoken to any of these two men, though my son, five years ago, said he asked Mr. Kissoon to take a photo with him at a downtown store in Georgetown. I wonder if Mr. Kissoon has any memory of that.
Although Freddie Kissoon and Mr. Hughes fit the bill, there are others. I like what I see of Sherod Duncan. I advise these people to start getting their act together. The Coalition is fading and Guyana needs saving. I would gladly return if I see Guyana in the hands of a Freddie Kissoon or a Nigel Hughes. I rest my case.
