The quick actions of a number of residents of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, helped capture a robber who was in the process of assaulting a young lady. The bandit, who trailed the young lady from the ‘B’ Field Sophia Bus Park in Georgetown to her grandparents’ home in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, pounced on the unsuspecting victim as she was about to turn into the home of her grandparents’ where she resided.
The victim, 20-year-old, Grace Hutson, a first-year International Relations student at the University of Guyana had left classes and was at the ‘B’ Field Bus Park to get transportation to her home. She said that she did notice the young man but thought nothing of him as he joined the minibus like every other passenger. Nothing seemed amiss about him. She said that little did she know that he was trailing her.
She however noted, that after disembarking the minibus she was walking through the dark street when the man suddenly pounced on her, pulling her handbag. “I pulled back my bag as I was very surprised. Then he proceeded to assault me in his desperate attempt to secure my belongings,” the young Hutson said.
She related that after the assault the man began walking briskly as though nothing was wrong. However, her grandmother who was looking on in surprise raised an alarm, alerting neighbours who gave chase after the young bandit.
The culprit was quickly apprehended and a member of the community policing group who was present handed him over to the police promptly.
The accused, 34-year-old Raymond Rodriques, of 112 Section ‘B’ Sophia was taken to court yesterday and charged with robbery and assault. Rodriques told the court that he is the father of five children and begged the magistrate to place him on bail as he is the sole breadwinner.
He further explained that he is a minibus conductor and assured the court that he will attend court.
However the police prosecutor requested that bail be denied, noting that the victim is still traumatized by the incident and the fact that such matters have become prevalent. He reminded the court that the victim was returning home from her University classes when she was attacked viciously by Rodriques. The magistrate denied bail.
He was subsequently remanded to prison until April 3, when he will reappear in the Sparendaam Magistrates Court.
