The Bartica stelling is now undergoing much needed repairs and is expected to be completed within a month. In December 2015, a total of $76M was allocated towards repairs to the Bartica, Leguan and Parika stelling.
The Transport and Harbours department of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure had said that a total of $30M was allotted towards rehabilitation works for the stelling which covers decking, fixing of piles, repair of northern high ramp, replacement of defective beams, planks on low ramps and upgrades to office area and washrooms.
On a previous occasion, the stelling benefited from repairs to the timber roof valley, northern fender system and the supervisor’s office. During this process, 46 piles were driven as part of rehabilitation works.
The repairs were seen as necessary by Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson who said in an interview that in the 21st century there cannot just be a stelling for ferries. Patterson had described the water front as the prime spot in every community. As such, he believed that an added effort should be employed to ensure that the stelling is transformed to match the new township status given to Bartica.
According to Deputy Mayor of Bartica, Kamal Persaud, the rehabilitation of the stelling has been one of her major concerns since getting into politics in 2015. She said the facility serves as the main port of access to the town and therefore required the necessary repairs. She said that it is time Bartica got the attention which it deserved.
Bartica was elevated to township status in May last year, becoming Guyana’s seventh town. The settlement is described as the gateway to Guyana’s gold, diamonds and timber.
