The international boxing competition scheduled to be staged on February 19th at the National
Gymnasium has been given a boost as another overseas based Guyanese has steeped in to provide support. USA Based Samuel Gittens has pledged US$200 and a large trophy for the Best Boxer.
Gittens decided on the donation immediately upon reading of the upcoming event and recently contacted Guyana Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle to make known his offer. The international card will feature 15 fights and will see participation from St Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and the host nation.
It is being organised by Seon Bristol and Alford McDonald in collaboration with the GBA to kick start the latter’s activity for 2017. Gittens said that his intention is to make the donation annual. Guyana is expected to field a number of youth and junior boxers to assist in preparation for the Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior tournament scheduled for April.
