The suspect accused of brutally chopping his ex-lover and her mother at Number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, yesterday appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh.
Shamar Ali Mohamed aka “Crabman”, 44, a father of two, of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, stood before the court, shackled as the charges were read to him. He was charged with two counts of intent to commit murder on Bhartie Udho and Amika Udho on December 24, last. He was not required to plead to the indictable charges. He was also charged with assault, committed on Alisa Ali, on the said date. He pleaded not guilty to that charge. Mohamed was represented by Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan who requested bail.
In his presentation to the court, Sohan stated that his client related that he was not at the scene of the incident and was not aware that he was wanted by the Police, and as such was seeking for bail to be granted. Sohan also told the court that his client has been living with the VC for the past four years.
However, Prosecutor Bernard Brown asked that bail be denied, based on the nature and prevalence of the crime, and that after he committed the act he escaped and went into hiding, then subsequently after being located he fled from the police.
Brown also pointed out that there are other charges against Mohamed that are currently before the court. Bail was refused by Magistrate Singh and Mohamed was remanded to prison. The matter was set for report on January 26.
According to the facts of the case, Shamar Ali Mohamed, on December 24 chopped Bhartie Udho and her mother Amika Udho about their bodies and assaulted Alisa Ali after jumping out of a clump of bushes at number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Mohamed reportedly chopped the younger Udho so badly that her left arm was severed during the ordeal. Her mother sustained chop wounds about her body and head. They were both hospitalized at the Springlands Public Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for emergency treatment.
Bhartie Udho and Shamar Mohamed reportedly shared a relationship, but the young woman had severed ties with the man due to his “jealous” behaviour. Mohamed who is said to be married with two children was allegedly having an affair with the young woman but after she ended the relationship this fuelled his intention to hurt her.
After he committed the act he escaped and police launched a search for him. He was eventually found at a location up the Canje Creek but upon seeing the police, he fled in a boat, with the police giving chase. He managed to elude the ranks, but not for long. He was captured the following day and taken into custody.
A restraining order was said to have been in effect after Mohamed on several instances had attempted to kidnap the young woman.
