A man who walks the streets of Georgetown daily and begs for money was yesterday placed on $10,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Brendon Glasford in the Georgetown Magistrate Court.
It is alleged that on January 2, at South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Lakeram Gopaul, threatened Aneil Sookhram.
The 67-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
The defendant told the Court, “I am pleading not guilty to the charge because I can’t remember when it happened. It’s a lot of people I does beg so I don’t remember everybody face. So I don’t know.”
According to facts Sookhram was on his way to work when the defendant approached him and asked him for money. When he refused the defendant started to point his finger in his face and threaten him.
The Magistrate told the defendant that he should not be going around threatening persons who refuse to give him money.
The man on hearing the amount of bail told the Magistrate, “I don’t have no family to pay my bail so you will have to tell them Police release me so that I can go and beg for the money and bring it back. Furthermore the year just start and January is a hard month so I can’t get that amount of money in a hurry. Let me go nah.”
Gopaul will make his next Court appearance on January 12.
