The PPP is the most racially diverse party in Guyana

The recently concluded Congress of the PPP has demonstrated and reinforced the view that the PPP remains the largest and most politically diverse political party in the country. Even a cursory look at the composition of the delegates and observers at the Congress would suggest that the PPP has to a large extent been successful in attracting a strong body of multi-ethnic and multi-class appeal which makes it a powerful political institution in Guyana.
Apart from its predominant Indo-Guyanese support base, it has attracted a majority of Amerindian support and a significant number Afro-Guyanese and Mixed segment of the population. This strong and diverse appeal has placed the party in a strong position to win national and regional elections on the basis of its own strength. The PPP however has opted for a much more inclusive and participatory approach to governance. It favored a “winner does not take all” model where all Guyanese regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation would become integrally involved in the task of nation building.
The fact is that despite the efforts of the PPP when in government to create a participatory and inclusive society, there still existed a significant degree of political alienation mainly along ethnic lines. The recent national and regional elections had once again brought to the surface the preponderance of the ethnic appeal in terms of voting behavior.
The resolution at the recent PPP Congress calling on the Party to pursue in a more aggressive manner the issue of alliance is timely and would serve to give new impetus to the Party’s strongly held position regarding the need to forge deeper and more strategic alliance with key stakeholders in our society.
This point was made by both Opposition Leader Dr. Bharat Jagdeo during his opening address and PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee during his presentation of the Central Committee Report to Congress. They both reiterated the need for the Party to reach out more to individuals and groups from all segments of our society in order to further broaden its multi-ethnic and multi-class appeal.
The new Central Committee of the Party is tasked with the responsibility of implementing the several decisions taken at the Congress all aimed at strengthening the party and repositioning it to retake political power within the shortest possible time. Apart from some new faces in the Central Committee, the right kind of balance of youth, gender and experience has been retained which places the party in a good position to realize the mandate of the Congress.
There can be no doubt that the 31st Congress of the Party was a huge success in terms of reinforcing the Party’s broad appeal as the most credible party to resume the seat of government in the next general and regional elections. This is why it is important to garner the support of all those who cherish the ideals of a democratic Guyana.
There is need for a broad alliance of all stakeholders both locally and internationally to ensure that the democratic gains of the country are not subverted as in the past. The recent PPP Congress has set the stage for a new kind of politics where the good of the country and her citizens are paramount and where all Guyanese have a role to play in the exciting task of nation building.
