A Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice resident has pleaded guilty to drunk driving and fleeing
from the scene of an accident last Friday.
Yesterday, the 20-year-old Grant resident, Tilendra Totaram, appeared at the Whim Magistrates Court to answer to three charges.
He appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mettleholzer to answer to the charges of failing to render assistance, failing to stop and driving under the influence.
He pleaded guilty to all three charges and was fined $7,500 for the drunk driving charge; $25,000 for failing to render assistance and $25,000 for failing to stop.
His license was suspended for one year.
According to reports, Totaram drove a motor vehicle bearing the license plate number PNN 7746 and collided with George Beramsingh aka Quarter, 66 years; Harrinarine Lakhan aka Ranal, 60 years; and Vidyawattie Adhari aka “Granny”, 60 years; all of Crabwood Creek who were sitting on a bridge rail situated about 20 feet off the public road at Deen’s Sawmill Access Road.
His vehicle was proceeding north along the western side of the Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, he attempted to turn east into the Access Road and in the process lost control of his vehicle and struck down the senior citizens.
Reports stated that after hitting them he exited the vehicle, secured his car and abandoned the scene. He was subsequently apprehended shortly after.
Reports state that the elderly persons received multiple injuries to their lower limbs and body and were rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital in a conscious state, and were transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Beramsingh and Lakhan were admitted and Adhari treated and sent away.
Beramsingh’s left foot had to be amputated due to the extent of the injury.
A breathalyzer test was also performed on the driver where it was found that his blood alcohol level was more than three times above the legally prescribed limit.
Kaieteur News also understands that Totaram was previously arrested on two other DUI cases and was warned.
