Dear Editor,
Please allow me space in your column to air some of the most disgusting, disgraceful and not to mention lawless situations in Jacklow. I withheld my name due to fear of victimization but as a concerned citizen am asking that the relevant authority please look into these matters urgently.
There is a community ground situated in Jacklow, Upper Pomeroon River. There were previous matters concerning this same ground and on the 7th July 2016, the Commissioner of Land’s and Survey, Mr Trevor Benn visited the ground whereby he informed the people from the community who were present that the land is state land and has been put aside as a community ground and as such no person or group, e.g cricket club etc owns it.
He also stated that the ground is there for the community’s benefits and anybody at any time can feel free to go there and recreate. But even as all of that was said matters just got worse. There is an individual along with his family and relatives who are claiming that the land belongs to his grandmother’s brother and that he spent a lot of money on the place so it’s his personal property.
This individual is using the ground and the youths of the community for his own benefit, whereby doing fundraising activities claiming to help the youths and the community but at the end there is no account of any of the funds. I am simply saying no account; I haven’t made any accusations. This same individual has a very close family member who is the treasurer of a youth group and at the moment cannot give any account of hundreds of thousands of dollars which the community youths work hard for.
Approximately two (2) months ago this individual along with his family and relatives dealt a youth of the community a trashing on the same ground which could have resulted in death since the youth received a blow to the temple from the fist of this individual who then locked off his throat while his family dished out punches. This beating transpired because he enquired about the accounts from the fundraising activities.
Things are getting worse. There are normally a few young boys who would go and play football in the afternoon after their day of work. A few weeks ago the same individual employed two men to clean the ground. As they were doing so the young boys turned up for their customary game in the afternoon and were chased off the ground by the two employees. Making matters worse this same individual is always saying that he has friends in society. Do you know this individual happens to be a councillor. Better is expected of him.
