One of Lusignan prison escapees recaptured

Quick action by ranks in ‘C’ Division has led to the arrest of one of the two suspects who escaped from the Lusignan Prison more than a month ago.
Fayouse Shakir, 27, of Lot 65 Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was apprehended around 09:15 hrs yesterday while in a minibus at Kitty. He was allegedly heading to the city.
Shakir along with 22-year-old Rajendra Deonarine of Essequibo escaped from the prison on September 19, last.
They allegedly used the Lusignan Golf course as their route of escape.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that acting on information, ranks intercepted a public transportation vehicle in the vicinity of the Kitty Service Station and extracted the convict, who at first denied that he was the person who escaped from the prison.
However, the convict retracted his statement when prison officers positively identified him as one of the escapees, who was serving a two-year sentence for Break and Enter and Larceny.
A police source from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) informed this newspaper that the suspect was arrested after someone called into a police station and informed ranks that Shakir was heading to Georgetown in a minibus.
Apparently, the caller was in the same vehicle but cut their journey short upon recognising the convict. The person also provided the police with the number plate and description of the bus.
Having received this information, ranks from both Georgetown and the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) went into action.
Eventually, the bus was spotted at the gas station where the 27-year-old was rearrested. He will soon face an Escape from Lawful Custody charge before returning to continue his period of incarceration.
The other escapee, Rajendra Deonarine, who was serving a two-year sentence for possession of cocaine, is still at large.
