Dear Editor,
My name is Neil Alonzo. I reside in the US, but like most Guyanese (well at least some of them) I try as much as possible to keep abreast of what’s going on in the country of my birth.
Also, due to the fact that my father still resides there (New Amsterdam, to be exact) I make frequent visits- as long as time permits- to see him, and the one thing that resonates with me, is the backwardness Mr. Freddie Kissoon always talk about.
Let me give you an example; in 2014 I went to the GPL office in New Amsterdam to pay a bill. To my surprise, I was asked by the security guard to read the sign outside. When I inquired, she said I couldn’t enter the building in short pants.
Even to pay a bill? I told her I wasn’t there for a job interview, but I was still denied entry. When I complained to friends, they say, oh they just go to bill express. Last year I was denied entry at the regional office in NA for the same thing.
Even though I only went there to acquire a life certificate for my father. With all that’s going on, those are the frivolous things they pay attention to?
Mr. Kissoon all I can say, is if you live to see your eighties and you are still in Guyana, just pray you are in good health.
Guyana can be a very cruel place towards the elderly. I wouldn’t elaborate, but the way those so-called health officials in New Amsterdam go about things, it leaves much to be desired. You know, we talk about change, but does that really exist in Guyana?
I sometimes compare the culture of governance in Guyana to that of the West Indies Cricket Board. You put different people in power, but things remain the same, or get worse. We have people like Jagdeo & Nandalall talking nonsense just because they have the audacity to do so.
These gentlemen should never be afforded the platform they are currently enjoying. We all know of Jagdeo’s thievery, but a certain PPP big wig should have been asked to resign, not only for that all too familiar conversation, but if you took into consideration what took place at Kaieteur News just over a decade ago (the five people that were murdered) which other AG in which other country could’ve gotten away with that?
The sad part is that these very people may return to power again. Elections day is four years away, but already the coalition is looking like a ‘lame duck’ government.
Neil Alonzo
