Dear Editor;
Since the first ship in the 1600s that brought captured Africans to Virginia in America, up until 2016, African Americans have been treated like a conquered people. A 14 year study, by a United Nations panel, which included a working group of experts on people of African descent assisted by human rights lawyers, in their report came to the conclusion that African Americans deserve reparations; for centuries of slavery, segregation and discrimination.
In condemning the slave trade as a crime against humanity, the panel found that the legacy of colonial history, enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism, and racial inequality remains a serious challenge. As far as they have seen there is no real commitment to reparations and truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Eddie Claude Jr writing in his book “Democracy in Black”, claims that between 1857 and 1957 a hundred year period, a Black man was lynched every four days in America. Present injustices and present day police shootings of Black men, and women and children is a new form of modern day lynching.
Institutionalised and structural discrimination creates barriers for people of African descent. Presently 24% of African Americans live in poverty. In conclusion the panel also found that White supremacy inhibits Social Cohesion among the US population.
