the Guyana Defence Force won 7 titles and reclaimed the championship trophy when the curtains came down on the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Intermediate Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, last Sunday evening.
The Republican Boxing Gym fielded three finalists who all won in their respective categories but once again had to be content with the second place slot as they were overwhelmed by the vast numbers of their arch-rivals.
Keevin Allicock represented the Forgotten Youth Foundation and turned in a wonderful display of aggressive punching to win the (Youth) bantamweight title. He was all business and after an especially vicious attack, the rampaging Allicock forced the referee to halt his contest against Albert Thomas, of the Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ) at 2:11secs of the third round. Allicock’s performance impressed the judges and he was also adjudged best boxer of his category.
Bantamweight boxer, Julius Kesney (RHJ) followed up his excellent showing in the semi-finals, where he defeated Republican, Orin Rodrigues, to carve out another impressive win against Courtney Lynch (GDF) and take the honours in the bantamweight division. So impressive was Kesney’s display that the judges unanimously voted for him as the best elite boxer on show.
The Republicans certainly hadn’t the quantity of boxers as their nemesis, the GDF, but what they lacked in that department they compensated in qualitative displays.
In an earlier report, Kaieteur Sport had inadvertently stated that Republican, Delroy Nero, had conceded a walk over to his gym mate, Dennis Holligan when in fact it was the latter boxer who had failed to turn up for the fight. Nero returned in the finals to defeat Rhondel Douglas (GDF) in an action packed affair to take the jnr/welterweight title.
His colleague, Joshua Joseph, retained the tempo one fight later to defeat Orlando Norton (GDF) even after the referee had harshly deducted 2 points from his (Joseph) score because his mouthpiece became dislodged. Even as his supporters displayed disgust and annoyance by the unfair ruling, Joseph shrugged it aside and launched a vicious attack that forced the referee to institute a mandatory 8 count on the soldier. Joseph picked up the pace and during an exchange his mouthpiece once again fell on the canvass and the referee once again punished the erring boxer by deducting a point.

Upon resumption, Joseph lashed out and forced his man to seek refuge behind high guards. This pattern continued right up to the bell and Joseph must be commended for the high level of discipline exhibited where he remained calm and even unperturbed amidst the unorthodox tactics of the third man. He was eventually adjudged winner and welterweight champion.
Republican, Bryan Leitch, replicated his semi final performance where he defeated Renaldo Niles (GDF) with another commendable display that earned him a points victory over Niles’ colleague, Ryan Roberts, and the heavyweight title.
Earlier in the night, Jamal Eastman was forced to quit on his stool at the start of the second round after sustaining an injury to his hand in his (Youth) lightweight bout against Travis Hubbard (GDF) for the latter boxer to be declared winner and champion by a TKO.
Akil Mounter of the Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG) faced off with his gym mate, Richard Lanferman, for the (Youth) welterweight title and the latter boxer gifted the former the (Youth) welterweight title after inexplicably quitting on his stool after just one round of tame aggression.
Anil Chitraj (GDF) then won the jnr/flyweight (elite) title after defeating his gym mate Royden Nicholson, while Don Cumberbatch (GDF) forced the referee to call a halt to his flyweight (elite) bout) after subjecting his opponent, Reeaz Jaburali to 2 mandatory 8 counts.
Lightweight, Jemol Brisport (GDF), won the championship after outpointing his gym mate, Triston Browne one fight before light/heavyweight pugilist, Aluku Bess (GDF) defeated another soldier, Marvin Williams, to capture those honours. The curtains came down after Renee Lewis (GDF) outpointed his gym mate, Floyd Cato for the super/heavyweight title.
