Curtis Vasconcellos and Orwyn Peters were yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court – for attempting to commit murder – at the conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) presided over by Chief Magistrate Ann
McLennan.
Vasconcellos of Remus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, and Peters, of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, are accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Grove businessman Neezam Khan with intent to commit murder on June 6, 2015, at Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The Chief Magistrate informed the accused that a Prima Facie case had been made out against them based on evidence led by Prosecutor Peter Hugh. As such, she told the duo that they will stand trial in the High Court at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
The men had been granted bail by the High Court, however only Vasconcellos posted the sum.
According to reports, the businessman and several of his colleagues were outside a snackette for which Khan is the proprietor, when four young men, two of whom are believed to be Vasconcellos and Peters, rode up on motorcycles.
It was reported that one of the men who was armed with a handgun, held up Khan and relieved him of jewellery before shooting him to the left arm. However, before the bandits could have escaped with the loot, Khan opened fire on them, killing their accomplice Michael Grant, formerly of Agricola. It was reported that Vasconcellos was also injured during the shootout. He reportedly made attempts to escape from the scene, but was later found lying a short distance away.
Meanwhile, in another case, George Dover was also committed to stand trial before a judge and jury for attempted murder.
This announcement was made by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the conclusion of another PI in which she ruled that sufficient evidence was led to prove the elements of the offence by Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt.
This PI ended with a testimony from Detective Corporal Dwayne Harvey who is stationed at the Providence Police Station and attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
An unrepresented Dover declined to say anything or call witnesses on his behalf
It was reported that Kester Yamster of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was stabbed to the upper left side chest and side by Dover as a result of a longstanding dispute between them, on April 10, 2015. Yamster, who was 15 years old at the time of the stabbing was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Yamster was reportedly sitting on his bike when his assailant approached him and stabbed him several times, before fleeing.
