Can there be social cohesion in a plural society?
Dear Editor;
Thank you for publishing my letter captioned “Here is my definition of culture” in Kaieteur News, Friday 02,2016. However, please permit me space to make this pronouncement in relation to a letter captioned “Social cohesion in Guyana is a profound necessity,” Kaieteur News, Saturday 03, 2016. I strongly endorse the writer’s sentiments.
However, can Guyana as a plural society, truly achieve the objectives for social cohesion if the human and cultural rights of every Guyanese regardless of race, age, gender, sex, religion, etc is not respected?
Therefore, it is incumbent on every Guyanese to assist the Minister of Social Cohesion, the Hon. Mrs. Amna Ally and her ministry to objectively create the enabling environment for the achievement of social cohesion.
But while we sit at the table of diplomacy with the minister and her team to resolve whatever issue/s that may impede on this objective, let’s mutually respect each other’s beliefs, cultural practices and way of life. It is obvious that the value for sentiments is greater than the value for facts/truth, therefore, I’m committed to live my life to objectively express and not to impress and to work for a cause and not an applause.

Then should you not start be doing that which you call for. I mean, I am tired of people not practicing what they preach. Where was your voice over the 23 years when cultures were being disrespected in editorials in Government run newspapers. These epiphanies that suddenly seem to be emerging in people today is evidence of the endemic hypocrisy that inundate our country.
