Dear Editor,
The year 2016 makes it 100 years of bauxite mining in Guyana and what does Guyana have to show for it? Basically nothing! For some time in the beginning, bauxite mining was being done by the Canadians under a firm ‘Alcan’ and they did so much for Canada like, building a city named (Kittymac) also dealings in a shipping company by the name of Sagunay. We then nationalised the company in the 70’s. What did we achieve personally from them?
A gold company came and opened in our country after a several years they could have boasted that they have mined over 1,000,000 ounces of gold from our country what did Guyana benefit from such exploits? We presently have two gold mining firms and a huge logging firm (company) and we finally struck oil. Are we going to continue on the same trend of firms exploiting our resources and in the end have nothing to show for it? Guyanese please don’t encourage such nonsense; we’re worth far more than just crumbs.
