-couple was at the time searching for missing child
Four months after he crashed a motorcycle killing his reputed wife, while they were searching for their
missing seven-year-old son, Steve Fiedtkou was yesterday released on $180,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
It was reported that Shauna Rice was the pillion rider of the unlicenced Honda motorcycle when a car collided with it at Mandela Avenue and Avocado Street, Georgetown.
It was reported that Fiedtkou and Rice were thrown some distance after the collision.
Rice sustained severe head injuries which caused her demise. The impact resulted in Fiedtkou sustaining two broken legs and head trauma.
The couple was reported to have been looking for their missing son at the time of the accident.
According to reports, the motorcyclists were not wearing helmets when the accident occurred and the bike was not equipped with lights.
Fiedtkou, 31, a carpenter/mason, who was represented by Attorney Eusi Anderson, denied the charge which alleged that on April 9, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he rode the motorcycle in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Rice, 29, formerly of 651East Ruimveldt Georgetown.
The defendant was also charged with driving an unlicensed motorcycle. He pleaded guilty to this charge and was ordered to pay a fine by Magistrate Renita Singh.
When Fiedtkou appeared in court, he was unable to walk without the assistance of crutches. His lawyer,
during a bail application, asked Magistrate Leron Daly to admit his client to reasonable bail.
Anderson told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner of his family and now bears the responsibility of taking care of his two minor children- ages seven and six months. He stated that there is no excuse for being an unlicenced driver. What happened, the lawyer said, is that his client and wife were acting out of desperation and love for their missing child.
Police Prosecutor Shevon Jupiter did not oppose bail for the defendant. However, Jupiter asked that the man lodge his passport with the court, pending the outcome of the matter.
Bail was initially set at $200,000 by the Magistrate, but Fiedtkou’s attorney begged for a reduction, claiming that his client only had $180,000.
The matter will be called again on September 13, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
