Kaysan Ninvalle, Kelsey Davidson are top Guyanese and Jamaican
Jamaica Observer – Kelsey Davidson, playing in the Under-11 girls’ singles final, was the best-placed Jamaican with a silver medal as the 2016 Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships ended at the National Indoor Sports Centre Saturday.
Davidson lost 1-3 to Priyanka Khellawan of Trinidad and Tobago, 11-5, 7-11, 7-11, 8-11, and followed up the silver medal in the singles to add to her Under-11 girls’ doubles triumph.

Two feisty contenders, Kaysan Ninvalle and Neveah Clarkston during the doubles. The pair battled tenaciously in the singles as Ninvalle took gold and Clarkston silver.
However, Trinidad and Tobago continued their excellent run at the championship as they won three singles titles Saturday, which gave them the overall championship title, as they outplayed their opponents to end with a total of 12 gold medals.
Meanwhile, Trinidadian Derron Douglas, who was the top seed in the Under-13 boys’ singles, maintained his unbeaten run when he defeated Isiah Layne of Guyana 3-0 with scores of 11-8, 12-10, 11-3.
Trinidad also won the Under-13 girls’ singles as top seed Shreya Maragh had to dig deep to win an exciting fifth and final set against Neveah Clarkston of Guyana 3-2 with scores of 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9.
Guyana’s Kasan Ninvalle prevented Trinidad and Tobago from taking a clean sweep of all singles final when he stopped Jalen Kerr in a thrilling five-setter, 3-2, with scores of 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7.
Trinidad’s coach Dexter Abbott said his players were dominant again in the singles and were hard to beat due to the work they had put in before the championships.
“I am very pleased with their overall performances as they have done excellently. We just missed making it four wins in the singles, but everything had gone well,” Abbott said.
He said it was a well-run championships and everyone was pleased. “However, I would like to see more Caribbean countries participating in these age-group competition, as it is a part of a development process for the future.”
Abbott observed that despite the fact that Jamaica did not win many gold medals, he had seen some promising and talented players, but the coaches will have to work much harder with them.
Jamaica’s coach Paul Curtis said the Jamaicans played extremely well despite not winning more gold medals, and they should be ready for the next tournament. He also congratulated Trinidad for their outstanding performances in team events, singles and doubles.
