The Region Two Regional Democratic Council at a recent statutory meeting approved its $4.7 billion 2017 budget. On the council’s agenda is to resuscitate the region’s once thriving rice cereal factory and to conduct infrastructural development in areas such as drainage, roads and bridges.
The budget was approved after a series of consultations with Neighbourhood Democratic Councils. Based on issues raised during the engagements, emphasis was placed on the construction of bridges at Golden Fleece, Queenstown, Anna Regina and Charity. With respect to the upgrade of bridges, this is to be done in the Good Hope, Johanna Cecilia, Perseverance, Pomona, Affiance and Better Success communities.
Rehabilitation plans are also on the cards, particularly for roads leading to Mainstay, Tapakuma and Lima Sands. Further, work is to be done for the maintenance of several roadways within communities.
Other plans for the region include the enhancement of community playgrounds. Council took this decision after it was agreed that it is better to develop such facilities, instead of play parks.
The budget also addresses needs within the education, health and agriculture sectors.
It is expected that a new building will be constructed for the Abram Zuil Secondary School. The Charity Secondary School is to benefit from an extension. Kabakaburi Primary School will also be extended to provide access to secondary education for Upper Pomeroon students.
Moreover, there are plans to purchase a boat and engine which will aid in transporting students in the lower Pomeroon to Wakapoa community and for the Bethany and Mashaboa communities.
For the Health sector, there are plans afoot to construct a new wing at the Suddie Public Hospital. Additionally, rehabilitation of the Oscar Joseph District Hospital is in the pipeline. Oxygen lines are to be installed at the Wakapoa and Kabakaburi Health Centres.
The council has also approved the construction of a road which will link the Essequibo Coast at Tapakuma to the Pomeroon at Siriki.
In the area of drainage and irrigation, there are plans to upgrade and maintain the various sluices, pumps, excavators, trenches and main canals. Council will also ensure that irrigation checks are constructed at Better Success.
To increase the region’s capacity in handling drainage and irrigation, two long-boom excavators will be purchased to facilitate the clearing of outfalls, residential and cultivation drainage and the de-silting of canals and trenches.
