A 27-year-old gold miner was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly having an illegal firearm, after he was arraigned before Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Devon Blount, of Kumaka, North West District, is accused of having a 12-gauge shotgun in his possession on August 10, at North Fork Backdam, Region Seven, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Blount, who had no legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
Police Prosecutor Kevin London told the court that Blount was caught with the illegal gun by police ranks and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) officials who were on patrol in the area.
Magistrate Daly instructed the defendant to return to court on September 8, when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
