Man accused of stealing phone succumbs – Uncle questions accuracy of “thieving” report

A man who was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Monday after sustaining a sound beating, reportedly at the hands of residents of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, succumbed to the injuries he sustained the very night.
Reports suggest that the man was beaten by a mob after he stole a “cheap phone” from an individual.
This publication had identified the man as 30-year-old Levi Armstrong of Lot 222 Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara. However, his uncle, Gilbert Garrett, said that his nephew’s name is in fact Levi Alleyne, and he was 21 years old. He reportedly lived at Princes Street, Georgetown.
According to Garrett, his nephew succumbed to his injuries at 21:30 hours on Monday.
He disclosed that Alleyne worked as a porter at the Muneshwer’s Wharf and was reportedly heading to his father’s residence at Paradise, East Coast Demerara, when he was attacked. Garrett said too that he learnt that his nephew was using a very familiar shortcut to get to his destination when he was attacked.
“I could put me head on a block that man was not a thief…the phone that my nephew dead and left was an expensive one, and I ain’t see yet the cheap phone people say he thief. The only lil problem he had was the lil ganja smoking.”
According to Garrett, when he visited the Vigilance Police Station, where the matter is being investigated, the only thing that ranks confirmed was that a call was made to the station informing that a man was beaten and left on the side of the road. He claimed that at no time did any rank confirm that his nephew was attacked because of “snatching anybody’s phone.” He said that he was told that police ranks were the ones who rushed his nephew to the hospital. Alleyne, Garrett said, was the last of three children born to his sister Diane Alleyne, who has been inconsolable since learning of her son’s tragic demise.
A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Levi Alleyne’s remains today.
