GRA plans to improve access to Tax services in Corentyne area

Authority, Godfrey Statia, promised the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI) that it will soon benefit from improved access to essential tax services which are currently only available in Georgetown.
Statia, during his visit to Region Six, assessed operations at the Integrated Regional Tax Offices at New Amsterdam and Corriverton and the Guyana to Suriname Ferry Service located at Moleson Creek.
He told the representatives of the UCCCI that their tax offices should be equipped to perform the same job being done at the Head Office in the Capital City. During the forum which was held at the City Inn Hotel in Corriverton, businessmen and businesswomen expressed their concerns about the services offered.
Particular focus was placed on the processing time for Customs declarations and other documents, Value Added Tax refunds, motor vehicle registration and other factors which have been making the job of doing business with the Authority difficult since persons have to be travelling from Berbice.
To these concerns he said, “I understand your rationale when you say you need clearing, manifests, compliances, and vehicle transfers etc., to be done here instead of Georgetown. We intend to put these things in place.”
Other issues which were brought to the fore, include the recent allegation by members of the Upper Corentyne business community of excessive force by officers of the GRA. The UCCCI members were assured that the approach of the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division is not to intimate but to provide necessary investigative and enforcement programmes to promote compliance.
During the outreach, Statia was in the company of Deputy Commissioner of the Integrated Regional Tax Offices Karen Chapman, Deputy Commissioner of Customs Excise and Trade Operations Lancelot Wills and Deputy Commissioner of (LEID) Fitzroy Corlette.
