With less than a week to go before the biggest sporting activity of the
August holidays, preparations have reached fever pitch with the Port Mourant “Big Yard” Turf Club venue a hive of activity and buzzing with excitement.
The 10th annual Guyana Cup $30M Horse race meet organized by the Jumbo Jet Business Enterprise in association with the Port Mourant Turf Club is slated for Sunday 14th August. Over 65 have so far taken entry in the nine race event.
Even as race day draws nearer and all seems ready to go more sponsors and horses are getting on board for the “Sports of Kings”.
The Nand Peraud Group of Companies, which has one of the largest rice milling establishment in Guyana and the home for Karibee Rice, has joined the group of sponsors with a major injection. The company has over the years been a major supporter and sponsor of Sports, education and other major community activities.
According to Managing Director Mr. Moen Persaud the company is always willing to assist and give back to society in a positive way. His company is more than happy to once again be associated with an event of such magnitude such as the Guyana Cup.
Chester Fried Chicken of West Berbice have also joined the list of sponsors. Mr Farad Habibulla son of Proprietor Fazal Habibulla handed over their contribution to a Representative of the Jumbo Jet Business Enterprise,.
Meanwhile, in order to have maximum participation and in light of Guyana’s Golden Jubilee Independence Anniversary Celebration, the organisers have relooked at the programme and made some changes and additions in order to have maximum participation.
The A class event with its $4M winners money and The Guyana Cup up for the takings have all the big names in the horseracing circle in Guyana lined up. The star studded cast includes Guyana only “A” class animal Score’s Even, double defending champion CP Got Even, the reigning number one ranked Kings Knight, the impressive quartet of Just Call Me Boss, Princess She Not, Golden Blue Echo, Plum Plum, and Lady Budapest, Climate Change and the newly imported Blame the Jockey among others are expected to give turfites their money’s worth. The winning horse will also get an extra $500,000. The distance is 1800M.
The 3 year old co-feature 1600M event remains for Guyana and West Indies bred and born horses for a winner’s take of $2M and trophy. The winner will get an extra $400,000 bonus.
The two year old Guyana Bred event has a first prize of $400,000 and trophy over 1100M with the winner taking home and extra $200,000. The jockeys in those events will reap extra cash for their victories.
The E and lower event goes for 1300M for a take home of $800,000 and trophy.
There is now the Suriname Invitational event which is open to G1 and Lower and all West Indies and Guyana bred horses that haven’t started since August 30th 2015. The winning prize is $650,000 and trophy over 1200M.
The H1 and lower 1200M race is now open to all West Indies bred horses that have not started since August 30th 2015 for a $400,000 first prize and trophy.
The next event is another 1200M event and is for 4years and over Guyana Bred, H3 and lower and 4 years and over West Indies bred non earners as they compete for a winner’s money of $400,000 and trophy.
The 1100M event for J and K class horses will see 4years and over animals from Suriname matching skills against the Guyanese animals for the $350,000 and trophy.
Horses from Suriname have also been tagged to feature in the L and lower event against those from Guyana over 1100M for a winning purse of $250,000 and trophy.
The top Jockey along with the runner up, the top stable and champion trainer will all be presented with trophies and other incentives compliments of the organizers and Trophy Stall.
