Fire of unknown origin destroyed a large two storey family building at Manchester, Corentyne
early yesterday morning. The fire broke out shortly before noon.
By the time the Guyana Fire Service arrived the house was engulfed. A few minutes later the building was reduced to rubble.
The crowd that arrived on the scene stood by helplessly, with many venting their frustration at the fire service that they claimed took too long to arrive. However, the fire service cane from New Amsterdam, some 20 miles away. There is another fire service headquarters at Skeldon, some 15 miles away.
The owner of the home, called Pats, said that he was not at home when the fire broke out. He was unable to save anything.
The Guyana Fire Service is investigating the cause of the fire.
