Wanita Heerelall, 31, who was brutally chopped by her ex-lover at the La Penitence market on Sunday, successfully underwent surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) late Sunday evening.
Speaking to her reputed husband via telephone, Kaieteur News understands that doctors managed to save her arm that was almost hacked off.
The man said that Heerelall suffered chops to her head and as a result sustained an injury to her skull. He noted that she is in a stable condition and even managed to eat some food. He posited that the suspect who is known as “Buckman” went with the intention of killing Heerelall because the chopping was brutal.
As is her usual Sunday routine, Wanita Heerellall, went to the market around 11:00hrs to do some shopping. An eyewitness told this publication that she was walking along Saffon Street when the man approached the victim. He reportedly pulled her hand as though he wanted to converse with her.
Several vendors along Saffon Street said that Heerellall pulled away from the individual and told him that she didn’t want anything to do with him. The man reportedly pulled out a “chopper” and chopped Heerelall repeatedly in the head, arms and stomach.
After he attacked Heerellall several vendors rushed to her aid and prevented him from chopping her to death. This newspaper learnt that the man received a sound thrashing at the hands of enraged persons before being handed over to the police.
Several witnesses told this publication that the man had bought the chopper and had sharpened it at the market earlier in the morning.
Heerelall’s reputed husband said that the suspect was once in a relationship with the woman and fathered her child. The reputed husband said that he usually accompanies her to the market on Sundays but this Sunday he stayed in to do some chores.
The suspect remains in custody as is likely to be charged with attempted murder in the coming week.
