Over the last few years the police have been showing that they are not only about arresting, charging and prosecuting people, but there are other sides of their activity that would help to make the lives of residents better.
Ranks of the Police ‘B’ Division have been doing an exemplary job in leading the way, as the police seek to do things different.
Led by Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, the Division has been touching almost every aspect of life in the ancient county.
During the week, Amsterdam and his ranks answered the call of a former colleague who is an amputee.
The man, Etalemy Blackman, 45, of Mahaicony who lost his leg in 2013 to diabetes and has been moving around with crutches, was presented with a cheque to assist him in acquiring a prosthetic leg.
Blackman left the job in 2002 as a Constable. He made a call to his former colleagues seeking help detailing his plight.
Asst. Commissioner Amsterdam subsequently mobilised his senior ranks, and in a show of gratitude invited Blackman to his Office at Strand and Coburg Streets, New Amsterdam, for the presentation.
Over the years, the police have made numerous interventions in various aspects of people’s life in their continued effort to foster a better relationship.
Speaking at the simple ceremony, Amsterdam stated that the police force is not only about solving crimes, executing charges and prosecuting cases, but about helping those in need and helping people help themselves. He is certain that with Blackman acquiring a prosthetic leg he will be more mobile.
He stated that the force is extremely pleased to be in a position to assist Blackman, especially since he was a part of the force and is now experiencing some difficulty.
Blackman expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Commander and his ranks for the initiative and for remembering him in his time of need.
He wished Commander Amsterdam and ranks well. He pledged to continue to have the police at heart and despite his limitations, assist in whatever way possible.
