Lawyer granted time to file response
Attorneys representing Kaieteur News have been granted another eight days to file an affidavit in response to the court action which was filed against the publication by Republic Bank Guyana (Inc).
The bank had moved to file legal action against Kaieteur News for two articles that implicated the commercial institution in alleged incidences of money laundering. Republic Bank objected to the publications claiming that its reputation was harmed.
The commercial entity through their Attorneys at Cameron and Shepherd wrote a letter to the publication seeking an apology and retraction for the articles appearing in Kaieteur News.
The demands by the bank were sparked by two articles that were published on January 6 and January 7, last.
The commercial entity also demanded damages for the loss it has suffered as a consequence of the alleged libelous publications in the sum of $5 million to be donated to a charity of their choosing.
Additionally, the firm requested an undertaking not to write and/or publish any further articles relating to this matter, save and except the apology. The bank threatened legal action in an event that the newspaper failed to yield to the demands.
After Kaieteur News refused to adhere to the demand for money, the bank moved to the court and was granted an interim injunction blocking the newspaper from repeating the contents of the report until the outcome of a court hearing. The bank had also moved to the courts seeking damages.
The injunction was subsequently made absolute by the Court. However a contempt motion was moved against the publication after the bank said the articles were existing on the internet. The lawyers contended that the presence online represented a continuation of the publication.
The matter is currently before Justice Dawn Gregory at the Georgetown High Court.
