Georgetown Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan, will be meeting with the Caribbean Container Incorporated (CCI) later this week to explore the possibility of having the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) partake in the process of corrugated cardboard collection.
The CCI, located at Farm, East Bank Demerara, recycles old corrugated cartons (OCC) often discarded as waste, to make bio-degradable boxes and packages for a multiplicity of purposes, including commercial packaging, fresh food and fast food boxes, seafood and office packages.
The Deputy touted the initiative as providing additional means of income for the M&CC at a time when the Council is exploring feasible means of boosting its income.
Duncan explained that the company had sent an expression of interest and he would be meeting with the representatives to iron out the details which he will subsequently relay back to the Council. The Council will then decide on the way forward.
He added that there is a challenge being faced by the company in the areas of sorting. He continued that the company relies on individuals who obtain the cardboard from various dumpsites including the Haags Botch Landfill, Eccles and elsewhere, while a large number is being imported from countries within the region.
He added that if all goes well, the M&CC will sort the corrugated cardboards when they carry out their collection process. These will in turn be sold to the company.
The price that will be paid for the cardboard and the volume that is required will be announced later since talks are yet to begin.
Recent reports have indicated that the cardboard waste is responsible for producing 80 percent of the paper utilised in the making of corrugated packaging in the CCI box plant facility. The company sells these products across Guyana and the Caribbean.CCI, formerly known as ‘SAPIL’, collects approximately 100 tonnes of cardboard waste and bond paper, which is white ledger paper or office paper.
In the past, CCI was not getting enough supplies locally which saw the company importing solid waste from other countries such as Trinidad and Tobago and neighbouring Suriname.
