Bandits elude police after exchange of gun fire

Three armed masked bandits on Wednesday, eluded capture, after exchanging gunshots with police moments after committing an armed robbery at Palmyra, East Coast Berbice.
According to information, about 20:00 hrs the Permaul family was at home when they were attacked by the three bandits who were all dressed in black and armed with handguns. The thieves first jumped the fence and attacked the patriarch of the home, Tameshwar Kissoon, who was relaxing in a hammock in the verandah of the one flat house.
The men proceeded to gun-butt Kissoon. While one of them stayed with him on the verandah, two went into the house and attacked his wife Nadira and son Vijai.
The bandits ransacked the house before escaping. They took a shoulder bag which was in the bedroom and contained over $500,000. They also escaped with a quantity of jewelry and two cell phones. The men then escaped into the backlands.
The police were informed and a number of patrols responded within minutes.
One of the patrols reportedly confronted three men dressed in black in a heavy overgrown area close to a burial ground, about a few miles away from the robbery scene. The men reportedly opened fire on the police and disappeared into the darkness.
The police have since arrested a number of persons. The investigation continues.
