A labourer was yesterday jailed for three years and fined $142,000 after pleading guilty to a drug trafficking charge, after he appeared before the Chief Magistrate ,in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
On July 17, at St. Ignatius, Central Rupununi, Vibert Peters, 28, had 110 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that Peters was caught with the illicit substance by police on mobile patrol in the area. He said that while in the vicinity of Moco Moco Bridge, ranks observed Peters emerging from a clump of bushes with a bicycle. Jeffers added that police noticed that there was a black haversack on the bicycle.
According to the Prosecutor, a search was conducted on Peters. Inside the haversack, Jeffers said, Police discovered a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis and told Peters of the offence committed before cautioning him.
Jeffers stated that under caution, the man told cops that he was carrying the drug for a friend. Peters was arrested and taken to the station where the drug was weighed in his presence and amounted to 110 grams.
The charge was subsequently instituted.
When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say, Peters told the court that a man had given him the drug as payment for work he had done for him.
