Athletes and teams from beyond the Georgetown locale will now be able to rest in comfort courtesy of the generosity of cellular phone giant Digicel who handed over a large quantity of mattresses to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to be used in the male and female dormitories, at the National Gymnasium.

Head of Customer Care Sherwin Osborne (left) and Director of Sport Christopher Jones pose next to the new mattresses at the National Gymnasium on Saturday.
The goodwill was an appendage to the repainting of the dormitories also undertaken by the Company that symbolized an improvement to the general outlook of the facility.
Acting on behalf of the Company was Head of Customer Care Sherwin Osborne, who officially presented the contribution to Director of Sport Christopher Jones in the presence of NSC Commissioner Lavern Fraser and Digicel Events & Sponsorship Manager Louanna Abrams on Saturday, at the Gymnasium.
Osborne speaking at the occasion told the gathering of media operatives that they had approached the Commission for the use of the facility to host participating schools in their nationwide football championship and following an on-site visit they felt the need to improve the conditions and immediately sought the approval of the Commission to do so and it was granted.
He added that in addition to presenting the forty (40) mattresses, they also decided to give the dorms a facelift and that was done as well.
Jones, responding to the gesture, thanked the Company for the timely donation, adding that it complements the work that they set out to do which is to improve all existing sports facilities across the country.
He informed that the Ministry had submitted a budget to the Government in the vicinity of $440million in last year’s National Financial Plan, but unfortunately it did not find favour.
He, however, disclosed that they intend to re-submit a similar budget for this year’s national budget and he is hoping that this time around it finds favour with the subject minister.
Jones said the plan is to have all the sports facilities upgraded to a certain standard which could then help local athletes develop their ability to compete with distinction at the regional and international levels.
He showed the media a design of the intended extension of the Gymnasium which will see the construction of tennis, netball, basketball, hockey and futsal facilities among others.
According to the Director, the facility will also cater for senior citizens, making it a multi-purpose one.
