The Caribbean is set to come face to face with international boxing’s
top brass as president of AIBA Dr. Ching- Kuo Wu has agreed to travel to the region later this year to hold discussions with administrators of the sport. This is according to Guyana Amateur Boxing Association President Steve Ninvalle, who is in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for the AIBA Executive Committee meeting.
In an interview from the Uzbek capital yesterday, Ninvalle disclosed that in discussions with Dr. Wu the latter expressed his concern for problems being faced by the Caribbean countries and confirmed travelling to Barbados in October with a high-level team of AIBA officials.
“He acknowledged the importance of the 22-nation Caribbean region and plans to have a first-hand hearing. This is a significant development as we have been clamouring for some time to be noticed and have issues dealt with,” Ninvalle said.
The date for the visit has not yet been decided but the GABA boss would be making contact with his regional counterparts to have them ready for the visit. He noted that high on the agenda would be the resuscitation of the defunct Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association.
Ninvalle and several of his Caribbean counterparts have been pushing for the revival of the sport in the region and have planned and held several meetings and tournaments, with the developmental tournament involving some 13 teams from around the region in Guyana last year being one major point of their efforts.
His (Ninvalle) ascension to the AIBA executive has been key to the region having a voice at the highest forum. His efforts has now begun to bear fruit and the impending meeting would see the region’s boxing officials get the chance to make a unified case for assistance to see the sport grow and secure elusive medals for their fighters in the not too distant future as advanced training programmes for both coaches and fighters will be accessed.
