As the spate of blackout continues to plague Region Two ( Pomeroon/ Supenaam), residents
throughout the region have been complaining about damage to their electrical equipment. They are now questioning who is going to compensate them for the damaged equipment.
Almost every resident living in Westbury which is situated on the northern half of the Essequibo Coast, can attest to damage to several electrical appliances as a result of the frequent blackouts. Audrey Garraway reported that her fridge, music set, blender and refrigerator were all damaged. Garraway said that the blackouts aided by a faulty transformer which is installed in her village compounded the destruction of her appliances.
She said she is left with the expense to repair those appliances. Garraway stressed that she was engaged in a conversation with an employee of the Guyana Power and Light. That person told her that GPL would not repair any of her damaged electrical appliances.
But people could apply to the power company once they can establish that electricity damaged their equipment. Many have been compensated.
Thursday night again and Friday residents on the northern half experienced another long period of blackout. The lights came off before 18:00 hours and came back around 2:00 hours, Friday morning. Several weeks ago, the backup engine which is housed in a separate compartment aback of the compound, at Anna Regina, went up in flames.
The cause of the fire is yet unknown, but it is believed to be electrical in origin. It was understood that repairs were being done to an engine which is housed in the interior of the building when the fire started outside.
Members of Guyana Power and Light are not saying what damage was incurred as a result of the recent fire, but again, it was understood that technicians had to be summoned from Georgetown to correct the problem.
That fire had left residents living in the north to be without electricity for over 18 hours.
