Dear Editor,
Permit me space in your newspaper to respond to Mr. Leon Suseran about denial of promiotion which he has made public. The author claimed to have been denied promotion along with dozens of other teachers but failed to acknowledge that his promotion on the preliminary list published by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) was one which breached the criteria as laid out in the advertisement which was prepared and published by the Teaching Service Commission, in most of the newspapers in Guyana.
The criteria stated that, “to be eligible for any HOD position the applicant MUST possess a degree in the subject area for which he/she applies”. Having said this, I wish to make this pellucid. Mr. Suseran did not meet the criteria to gain the position of HOD English for which he was promoted, since he possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and a Trained Teachers’ Certificate in English. Mr. Editor, how then can he be promoted HOD English? It is quite simple. He does not have a degree in English, therefore should never have been promoted to the status of HOD English. Mr. Suseran questioned the reason for stagnating the promotion process as,” Greed? Selfishness? And oh yeah, power and ego?”
I ask the question; who is the greedy, selfish, power drunk and egoistic person here. He knowingly applied for a position which the criteria ruled out. Is this honesty? The TSC supported his dishonesty by granting him the position. Mr. Suseran’s case is one of many such cases where there was a direct breach of the criteria which should have been observed and followed by TSC and School Board Secretariat.
Think about how Mr. Suseran’s promotion has disinfranchised another teacher who rightly satisfied the criteria. This decision taken by Guyana Teachers Union to challenge the Teaching Service commission along with the School Board Secretariat was indeed a long overdue one, because we believe that while some persons were wrongfully promoted others have suffered for over 20 years, as admitted by TSC.
I urge Mr. Suseran to be truthful and present facts when writing since his promotion as HOD English can be described as a favoured one. In simpler terms Sir, you were promoted ahead of someone who rightfully deserved it.
GTU President
Mark Lyte

I am in sympathy with Mr. Suseran over his promotion. He is losing money and his promotion to the next level will be affected. I may be prejudiced against the GTU based on experience. This Union in the seventies and eighties voted allegience to the then government. I was prompted senior master and got just about five dollars increase in my salary when I was spending some two hundred dollars in transportation. When I complained, the GS said I applied for the job. I lost respect for him. On the other hand Mr Ancel Hazel, the president listened. He told the GS that only a crazy person would do that and I was not crazy. I endeared him from then on. I eventually fought my case and won. The GTU needs to listen to the issues of teachers and move on rather than pick bones with them
The GTU has a representative on the TSC. Was this issue raised by the GTU’s representative before the list of promotions made or the decision was made without the Union representative’s knowledge? There are several break downs- HM, Region, Union and TSC.
Why are graduates from the Burrowes Art School called graduates with the blessings of the Union?
