Dear Editor,
The reports keep trickling in; if this continues proliferation, and not aberration, would be the applicable word. They come from reliable, sober people. They are about replacements, resignations (sometimes forced), and early retirements directed mostly at one group, and impacting mainly this one group only. That would be Indians.
This is disturbing on many fronts; and is no longer concealable on any. First, it undermines, if not negates, appeals for social cohesion. Those calls end up being viewed as spurious, and bereft of depth and meaning. Second, it weakens the government’s razor thin presence; and it is that thin. Third, it diminishes goodwill towards, and opinion of the new president. Fourth, it serves as a blessing and cannon fodder for the political opposition. Fifth, it operates (no matter how dismissed) as a curse on the houses of the diehards, tribalists, and racists alive and well on both sides. And sixth, the hard thorny divisions are exacerbated and reinforced.
Editor, believe me: below the surface calm dissension crackles across the board, and ensnares citizens in this place. Sometimes it is subtle, sometimes direct; the circumstantial is always about the historical and the maniacal. Moderates and centrists (such as they are) are a rare breed, the bobbing flotsam occasionally spotted, quickly overwhelmed by the heavier seas of extremists and their close cousins. It is a troubled world out there, in this uncertain, but stubborn Guyana.
Ascend with arrogance and degeneration into dismay (or premeditated bureaucratic iniquity) are the two faces of Guyanese committed to the old ways, which have always crippled this society. Look closely, and every post-election crossroad arrived at and taken, has channeled towards destinations that have invariably contributed to political and social anxieties and discord. The same cycle seems to have restarted by reversion to what has debilitated every time.
Editor, it should be noticed that I refrained from using such provocative words as “purge” or “cleansing” or any equivalent descriptive. Be assured that others will not be so circumspect or dispassionate. It is too much of an opportunity to be ignored; to not amplify for maximum benefit; and to not twist the scalpel to reopen never closed old wounds.
It is why I continue to appeal to the new and now settled powers to abstain from the ancient ugliness. By all means, get rid of deadwood, deadbeats, placeholders, sinecures, and the rest of that useless brigade of leeches. But, by the same token, every effort must be made to do the right thing, when circumstances so demand. It is better to err on the side of caution. It is wise to resist the inclinations towards what is patently wrong, and ultimately destructive to national unity and national destiny. I plan on writing more on this particular area as the situation warrants.
GHK Lall
