International athletes have invaded Guyana for the Aliann Pompey (AP) Invitational Track and Field Meet that will be held today from 3pm at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

Guyanese and international athletes, who will be competing in the Aliann Pompey Invitational Meet today at Leonora, pose for a photo opportunity after the Press Conference yesterday at the Ramada Princess Hotel.
The athletes who are in Guyana from several countries expressed enthusiasm of competing at the meet and in Guyana, some for the very first time during a press conference held yesterday at the Princess Ramada Hotel.
Pompey indicated that she is excited ahead of the event today, and happy to have the support of Digicel, Ramada, GUYSUCO, Banks DIH, Fly Jamaica and the Government of Guyana. Digicel Events and Sponsorship Manager, Louanna Abrams was also optimistic.
“Digicel is happy to be part of this event. We are excited to have all this competition in Digicel’s 4G Men’s 100m and Women’s 200m,” Abrams said, adding that she anticipates some exciting races.
Guyana’s first time Olympic qualifier and 200m record holder, Brenessa Thompson said that the goal is to run faster at all times.
Olympic Games-bound athletes, Winston George, Aliya Abrams and Thompson are among a number of international athletes, who will compete in the inaugural meet. Sprinter

Harris and Bascom have not met the Olympic standards yet. The premier events will be Fly Jamaica Women’s 100m, Guyana Olympic Association Men’s 400m, Ramada Princes Hotel 110m Hurdles, Quality Plus Men’s 200m, Guysuco Men’s Triple Jump, Digicel Men’s 100m and Women’s 200m.
Other events scheduled for the day include the Women’s 400m, Men’s 800m, Women’s 800m, Women’s 1500m, Men’s 5000m, Men’s 400 Hurdles, Women’s 400 Hurdles and Women’s Triple Jump.
According to the start list, in the 200m, George will face opposition from Jamal Roberts (USA), US-based Harris, Trinidad’s Kyle Geraux and standout locals, Rupert Perry, Davin Fraser among others.
George, the national 400m record-holder, will compete against Brycen Spratlin (USA), Chris Geisting (USA) and Tabarie Henry (USVI) among others like locals Arinze Chance.
Thompson who broke Pompey’s national 200m last month, will come up against Kadecia Baird (silver medalist at World Juniors, CARIFTA Games gold medalist), Paris Garcia (Puerto Rico), Tahisha Harrigan (BVI), Laverne Jones-Ferrette (USVI) and locals like Natrena Hooper, Tirana Mitchell and Ebony Nelson.
