Three remanded for Kaieteur News grenade attack

Three men were yesterday remanded to prison when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer a charge in relation to a grenade attack on Kaieteur News which occurred on June 4, last.

Alfie Garraway, 36, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown; Joneil Howard, 20, of Lot 322 Section ‘C’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara; and Leroy Williams, 25, of Lot 11 Durban Backlands, Georgetown were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
It is alleged that on June 4, last, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, they unlawfully and maliciously conspired together with other persons to cause explosion by way of grenade likely to endanger lives and cause damage to property. The men had no legal representation.
Howard surrendered to police shortly after a wanted bulletin was posted for him.
According to reports, on the day in question, a security staffer heard an unusual sound near the vehicle of publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall, which was parked on the western side of Saffon Street. On checking the front of the vehicle, the staffer spotted the grenade lying near one of the front tyres.
This act of terror against the media house has been condemned by many including the Government of Guyana.
Video footage from the company’s CCTV cameras showed a grey vehicle slowing as it approached Mr. Lall’s vehicle. The driver accelerated after the explosive device was thrown.
Garraway- a trader; Howard- a labourer and Williams a clothes vendor will make their next court appearance on July 7, when the matter will be called for reports.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, strongly opposed bail for the trio citing the gravity of the charge and penalty attached to the offence. The Prosecutor indicated that police have completed their investigations in the matter.
