On October 24 last year at the Giftland Mall during the ninth round of his WBC FECARBOX Lightweight
title fight against Dexter Gonzales, 27-year-old Clive Atwell fainted and was diagnosed with bleeding in the brain.
An emergency surgery was done by Dr Amernauth Dukhi to save Atwell’s life and a second ‘corrective surgery’ to insert a plate was recommended. The cost for travel to Trinidad, accommodation and the surgery is approximately $5Million.
The National Featherweight and Lightweight Champion who also hold the WBC CABOFE Super Lightweight and Featherweight titles said that since the news of his plight was highlighted in the media, he has gotten plenty of support from the public.
“I have been promised $1million from the Government and with the $500,000 from my Church and close to another 500,000 from donations, so I need just over $3Million more to do the surgery and with God’s help I know that I will have a successful surgery,” said Atwell who is also a pastor.
“I spoke to Dr Steve Mahadeo from the St Clair Medical Centre and he gave me the cost and said he will do the surgery as soon as I am ready. Once I get the money I am going since time is very important,” said Atwell.
Yesterday morning the Boxer appeared on Niam Chan’s TV show on Channel six and will be on NCN tomorrow night when he will be the guest on Max Massiah’s Maximum Sports.
Tomorrow morning Atwell will be guest speaker at his ‘old school’ Huston Secondary where a donation will be made to him. A telethon is being organised on NCN.
All the collections at the funeral of former Kaieteur News crime reporter Dale Andrews on Tuesday were given to Atwell’s surgery expenses.
Atwell campaigned under the guidance of Coach Paulette Nurse and Leon Moore and fights out of the Ricola Gym, now known as Donald Alison Gym after his late Coach. The boxer thanked God and everyone who has helped him so far.
Atwell can be contacted on telephone number 642-9961 and has opened an account at Republic Bank number 242-970.2 for fans and well wishers to make contributions.
