Dear Editor,
Please permit me some space in your very informative news paper. Mr. Editor Guyanese who are born here, work and contribute to the development of our dear country are treated as last citizens. Some Guyanese live in very inhuman conditions yet they work, pay taxes and contribute to our GDP while they struggle to make ends meet with low wages and high cost of living, and cannot have even one duty free vehicle in their whole life time.
The foreigners come here under the name (investor) harvest our natural resources and when they are finished, they pack up and leave the emptiness behind, but when they arrive here they are given all kinds of tax breaks, duty free concessions for vehicles, building materials etc etc. Take for instance Omai.
Now we have Bai Shan Lin. When they came here ten years ago they promised to go into value added wood business and employ Guyanese but instead they were allowed to denude our forest and ship the logs to China. They harvest our gold, compete with our businessmen, and do not pay VAT. The Chinese enjoy the world of concessions while they compete with Guyanese who pay all kinds of taxes and duties. The BSL is competing in water transport, trucking, housing and they are planning for our oil which is yet to begin pumping from our reserves, just look at huge installation they have constructed. If a Guyanese have a house and lot and he/she applies for another house lot because they have a son/daughter coming up they are denied an allocation but Bai Shan Lin can have as much as they want because Mr Chu Hongbo is a Guyanese citizen above the born Guyanese.
I think if anyone is given citizenship here and he/she breaches our laws, tax or otherwise that citizenship should be revoked, I have never seen a Chinese attend driving school but they have drivers licenced to drive. I strongly feel we can carry on without the Chinese because they are not INVESTORS they are HARVESTERS. I am told the Chinese exportl their monies earned here.
Harri P Beharry.
