Areas in the capital city that were previously prone to flooding were free of excess water following recent rainfall. This observation was made by European Union (EU) Ambassador, Mr Jernej Videtiè.
The Ambassador during a visit to meet with City Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green, commended the efforts of the City Council to restore the drainage system.
The EU will be working with the Government of Guyana and by extension the City, to upgrade the outfall channels. This, Videtiè said, would help to maintain the integrity of the drainage system.
The Mayor and City Council is responsible for the maintenance of 11 outfall channels.
Videtiè, during discussions with the Mayor, promised to reopen bids for contractors to submit tenders for repairs to the buildings at City Hall.
The EU Ambassador said that the tenders received from a previous advertisement placed in the print media were not successful. Hence, the EU would give interested parties another opportunity to re-tender.
Also, during the interaction with Mayor Chase-Green, the Ambassador said that there are other areas of support that the Council can benefit from including climate change, training in financial management and taxation, and the promotion of sustainable cities.
Mayor Green said that the Council is grateful for collaboration with the Diplomatic community in the area of drainage and restoration of the City Hall Building.
Meanwhile, Zhang Limin, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of China, also paid a courtesy call on the Mayor, during which he congratulated her on her promotion.
Ambassador Zhang said that he hopes the good relationship between the City Council and Government of China would continue, and added that the Chinese Government would like to collaborate with the Georgetown City Council on several projects that would help to advance the City.
He further noted that during the cleanup campaign that was held by the City Council, the Chinese Government contributed $8 million to help with the exercise. Also Ambassador Zhang extended an invitation to Council for a special exchange visit between Chinese and the Georgetown Municipality.
Mayor Chase-Green said that the Council is grateful for the assistance provided and would work with the Chinese Government to realize the vision of the City of Georgetown. She noted that the Council can benefit from the advancement of China in a number of areas, particularly science and information and communication technology.
The Georgetown City Council has shared a sister city relationship with Fuzhou City since May 2006.
